Ergonomic Guidelines to be Published Soon

After many years of work from many dedicated individuals, the IEA and the International Commission on Occupational Health (ICOH) is jointly publishing “Ergonomic Guidelines”. These guidelines are designed to assist personnel in the field of occupational health who have a limited knowledge of ergonomics. They outline the process of identifying, assessing and controlling problems related to health and safety in the workplace.

The ultimate aim is that they can provide assistance in planning basic intervention strategies based on sound ergonomics principles.

We are deeply indebted to then IEA and ICOH presidents Ian Noy and Jean-Francois Caillard for their leadership to begin this process with a Memorandum of Understanding between our two organizations. Work began at the IEA Triennial Congress in San Diego in 2000 with a small group who discussed how to implement this project. Kazutaka Kogi, Kazutaka Kogi, Barbara McPhee and Pat Scott made up the core group responsible for the majority of the development work. After many years of hard work and persistence and with the financial support from ICOH, IEA, Institute for the Science of Labour in Japan and the Jim Knowles Group in Australia. The printing of these Guidelines was supported by Ergonomia and the IAD Institute for Ergonomics from the University of Technology Darmstadt in Germany. Thanks to the efforts of so many over the years, we are pleased to announce that these Ergonomic Guidelines will be available at 19 € or 25 USD. Check the IEA website for details. http://www.iea.cc

IRSST, Canada, La manutention chez les femmes : un regard du point vue biomécanique et ergonomique 0999-8020

Les manutentionnaires encourent des risques très élevés de blessures au dos. Afin de trouver des solutions à ce problème chronique, l'IRSST subventionne une programmation de recherche sur la manutention. Un premier projet issu de cette programmation a comparé les méthodes de travail des manutentionnaires experts et novices masculins et a dégagé des principes de manutention qui serviront de guide à l'élaboration d'un programme de formation.
Le présent projet se penchera sur l'étude des stratégies des femmes manutentionnaires. L'objectif est de comprendre ce qui différencie les modes opératoires des femmes manutentionnaires de ceux des hommes. Les résultats de cette recherche serviront à mieux adapter les programmes de formation en fonction du sexe.

Forthcoming launch of the Healthy Workplaces Campaign on Safe Maintenance
EU-OSHA’s next Healthy Workplaces Campaign will focus on the importance of safe maintenance in European workplaces, and draw attention to the risks when it is not carried out properly. It will be officially launched on 28 April 2010 and support a wide range of activities at both the European and national level.
